In deep reflection seismics, the acquistion parameters are optimized to image the middle and lower crust. Nevertheless, the knowledge about the velocity-depth structure of the sedimentary overburden is important for crustal studies. Macro-velocity models are needed, for example, for depth conversion of time horizons, for the application of depth migration algorithms and for tectonic balancing.
