An essential pre-requisite for successful 3D pre-stack depth migration in structurally complicated situations is an accurate background velocity. Building such a model, even for isotropic velocities, is still difficult despite advances in 3D model building, ray tracing and velocity analysis. In complicated models, velocity anisotropy will be important to image structures with significant variations in dip, e.g. faults or salt domes. The evidence for anisotropy is strong, and a few theoretical and case studies have illustrated its importance in migration.
