Summary:
The distribution of quartz grain optical axes orientations in the sandstones in the Carpathian thrust zone is studied. The oriented samples of sandstones were collected along the profile going across the Alpine orogenesis thrust fault zone in order to study the microstructural evidence of changes, imposed by tectonic stresses on rocks. The statistics of orientation of quartz optical axes in mineral grains can be an indicator of paleotectonic stresses, causing the formation of the Carpathian thrust sheet (nappe) zone during Alpine orogenesis.
