Summary:
The importance of ground water quality in Ukraine grew significantly. Particularly noticeable this problem has become in recent decades. Rural inhabitants water supply is almost exclusively limited to the uppermost aquifer in Ukraine. So about 25% of Ukrainian population have no water pipe to their households and use drinking water wells. Therefore, most of the water wells contaminated with nitrates, sulfates, chlorides, heavy metals, organic compounds. The contamination of groundwater is often determined by number of natural and artificial factors. Natural factors are thickness of the aeration zone, its structure and the presence of arenaceous rocks. These factors promote penetration of contaminants into groundwater. That is why interest to aeration zone considerably increased. UkrSGRI experts have realized complex of works on the assessment of environmental and geological conditions in Ukraine. Estimation of natural protective properties of the aeration zone rocks has become an integral part of these studies. Authors defined time for which pollution will reach the uppermost aquifer. The comparison of pollution penetration time with the prevailing direction of physical and chemical migration of chemical elements allows forecasting risk of the uppermost aquifer`s pollution. Creation of geological information databases in GIS allows solving application-oriented ecological problems.
