Porous-plate measurements show wide variation in irreducible water saturation for Turonian reservoir: from 0.45 for high permeability samples to 0.9 for low permeability. To increase accuracy of geological modeling, the concept of free fluid porosity and effective (mobile) water saturation is utilized. Application of this workflow is illustrated using real data from the hydrocarbon field in the Western Siberian Region of Russian Federation. Turonian gas reservoir has a complex lithology with identical mineralogical composition for whole field, mostly consisting of poorly consolidated siltstones and fine grained sandstones with high clay content; has high total porosity (average is 28%), and low permeability (average is 2 mD). Core study shows that roughly half of clay minerals with high water absorption capacity are forming siltstone size grains and therefore contributing to total porosity and reducing the free fluid porosity.
