Organic matter rich shale layers of Kachchh basin, India has good source rock potential but no commercial prospect has yet been established. The present study is on Jhuran shale samples from Kachchh basin of Mesozoic age to understand their thermal maturity level for hydrocarbon prospects. Based on the optical spectroscopic approach, we attempt the structural analyses of components present in solvent extracted powder shale samples and in the demineralized organic-rich residual portion of the same samples. Meaningful information about the aromatic moieties of these two portions from UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopic study demonstrate interesting insight on the thermal cracking process during hydrocarbon generation from sedimentary organic matter (SOM) which could provide a potential scale of thermal maturation for source rock evaluation.
