The Munich metropolis (Germany) is going to supply its whole heat district network with geothermal energy by 2040. The geothermal energy will be produced from a carbonate platform in approximately 3000 m depth. To reduce the exploration risk a 170 km2 seismic survey was acquired. The exploration workflow was accompanied by a research project which included structural and facies interpretation, shear wave analysis and hydraulic simulation. The subprojects concentrated on special investigations that are be able to improve the reservoir characterization. The interpretation showed that the distribution of sinkholes are related to the fault pattern and fault distribution is related to strike-slip faulting. A classification scheme based on seismic attributes help to identify different sedimentation areas and could be linked to vP/vS ratios. These findings can used for the modelling of the permeability distribution. The hydraulic simulation of borehole patterns of pairs of injection and production wells showed the coupling among the wells and the developing of the flow and temperature field within a period of 50 years.
