Summary:
We applied a multi-parameter viscoelastic full-waveform inversion (FWI) to a field shallow-seismic dataset acquired in Rheinstetten, Germany. The final Vs and Vp models revealed a sharp triangular low-velocity anomaly, which accurately delineates the location of a refilled trench. We compared the viscoelastic FWI result to the results estimated by passive-viscoelastic FWI in which Q models are included but not updated during the inversion. Although the passive-viscoelastic results could also reveal the triangular low-velocity anomaly in the Vs models, they are contaminated by vertical-striped artifacts, which is mainly caused by the neglecting of heterogeneity in the Q models. A good agreement between our viscoelastic FWI result and a migrated GPR profile verified the reliability of our estimated velocity models.
