Knowledge of orthotropic velocity anisotropy in a sedimentary basin can facilitate application of advanced methods in processing and interpretation of large offset-wide azimuth seismic data. Here, we model an orthotropic medium in a succession of VTI layers by adding vertical fractures to a VTI host layer and measure P-wave velocities in a synthetic radial VSP experiment. We invert P-wave velocities for orthotropic parameters and show that to obtain valid results, line spacing of (maximum) 10 degrees and source-receiver offsets of no less than the depth of orthotropic layer are essential.
