A new method to determine thermochemical sulfate reduction was developed by combined use of 34S/32S isotope ratios in dibenzothiophenes and 13C/12C isotope ratios in methyl cyclohexane in crude oils. The approach should be a powerful tool for identification and assessment of thermochemical sulfate reduction in petroleum exploration in deep buried basins, as well as for understanding the basic reaction mechanisms and kinetics controlling thermochemical sulfate reduction..
